Hello, dears!
I hope everyone is doing well and is as excited as I am about the official countdown to Christmas. That's right, winter snuck up on us and it's apparently here to stay – at least judging by how nippy the weather has been lately. But hey, I shan't complain – after all, the cold weather brings more customers in from the cold, looking for that perennial favourite, the bacon butty!
As tempting as one of my butties or a serving of fish and chips are in cold weather, however (especially when you do something as physically demanding as courier work), they can also set you back considerably if you treat yourself several times a week. I saw a recent article where takeaway food was listed as one of the first things you should cut back on if you want to afford your own house faster – and, even though I own a cafe myself, I have to agree. It CAN get very expensive.
Get Healthy, Save Money
Fortunately, there's a very easy (and healthy) alternative to this: make your own food at home and take a packed lunch with you when you go out on your courier work. Not only will it save you time standing in line at the cafe, it will save you money – and once you get the hang of it, it can be just as tasty as cafe food! (I'm really doing myself out of a job here aren't I?)
Now, I know what you're thinking. Your courier work has you running around here, there and everywhere, and you hardly have any time to sit down, let alone prepare meals. Even when you do, you're too tired to bother. I know. I know. So it's a good thing packed lunches don't have to be super-complicated, then, eh?
Simple Snacks, Good to Go!
That's right, even if you can't make a bacon butty yourself (well, you CAN, but it isn't the same as mine) you can certainly prepare your own version of most of the sandwiches you buy pre-made from Tesco and the likes. Even paninis are not that hard to make, especially if you have a panini press. And, of course, there are salads in the warmer months – simple, nutritious and healthy!
If you’re truly hopeless in the kitchen, even at that level, fear not. Things like dairy, nuts, fresh fruit, dried meats or even popcorn are nutritious, tasty and filling 'on-the-road' snacks (have a look here), which can take the place of that bacon butty or turkey sandwich in a pinch. I know, it's not quite the same...but it's an idea, hmmm?
Should you decide to go healthy, however, please do not forget about your dear old Gertie. Still come and grab yourself a bacon butty every now and again. A girl needs to make a living, after all...
For now, though...ta-ra!
