Gertie's Adventures As a Courier Driver

Hello darlings!

Today was another big day for your dear old Gertie. If you've been keeping up with my blog, you know I applied for (and got) a job as a courier driver in the company my nephew Steven works for. Yesterday I went in to speak with his boss, Mr Wallace, and today I had my first actual parcels to deliver. I wanted to do it on my own, but Steven, silly billy that he is, insisted on riding along – and since he was off-duty, Mr Wallace posed no objection. So for my entire first day as a courier driver, I had my nephew as a tag-along. I can't say I disliked the company – Stevie's a sweetheart – but I do wish he would trust me more. He's just like his father in that regard!

One battle I did win, though, was the one about the car. Steven wanted to take his own vehicle out, but I held my own for once, and we ended up going in the car Mr Wallace had kindly lent me from his fleet. It wasn't new, and it was a little banged up, but it didn't have any major problems, which was good enough for me. My own Mini isn't the newest car in the world, but it runs, it's reliable, and I'm not fussy. This was the same, and my first experience as a courier driver ended up going without a hitch.

I didn't have very many packages to deliver (naturally, since I was only just getting started) but I had enough to keep me busy for the whole day – and, few though I had, they led to me meeting the most interesting people! The first one, for example, was in my village, and it turned out to be for a lad I knew, the son of a lady I play Bingo with on Sundays. He's recently moved into his own place, and he's obviously still in need of parental guidance, because he answered the door in his boxers! When he saw who it was delivering his package, he was quite contrite, but I still had to tell him off – especially since he had a girl in there with him, and she was wearing next to nothing as well! I swear, youths these days! Stevie was mortified to see me tell the lad off right at his door, but one must uphold moral values, mustn't one?

My second door was much more pleasant. It belonged to a very charming gentleman, around my age, who turned out to know me from church (didn't I tell you I knew everyone in the area, dears?) He was surprised to see me working as a courier driver, rather than behind the counter at my cafe, and flirted with me quite awfully! Not that I minded – ever since my Charles died (God rest him), I've sometimes felt awfully lonely myself...

Speaking of which, I've made an appointment with Nigel (that's my new friend's name) for a spot of dinner this evening, and I'm already running late. Ta-ra!

X
Gertie
