Hello, dears!
Well, as ever, ask and thou shalt receive! These reader interactions never disappoint, and this latest one didn't either. It seems as though when you lot have an interesting topic to talk about there is very little stopping you – not that I am complaining, of course...
Now, if you remember, the theme for this past week's discussion was your quirkiest, most unusual or otherwise oddest courier jobs. I wanted to hear anecdotes and stories from your time on the road performing delivery work, even if they were not particularly impressive – which, I must admit, some of them actually were. Still, we only have so much space, so I was forced to leave a lot of excellent stories out and just focus on three or four favourites, which are below.
'I've been working on courier jobs for nearly 20 years, and there are many, many stories I could choose from, but one in particular sticks in my mind. I was travelling from Chichester to Bristol in terrible weather – not only was it sleeting, but there was also fog. I could not see 10 yards ahead of me and I was dead scared I would end up hitting something or someone. And then, to make matters worse, my van door began to slam.
Now, I was in the middle of a motorway when this happened, so I had to wait until the next rest area to fix the problem. Except that when I stopped the van and went to check the door...it was locked shut. I tell you, I felt a chill run down my spine then. There was no more banging for the rest of the trip, but that is one job I am never going to forget anyway!' - Dan, Sussex.
'I'm not sure this counts, but before I started doing courier jobs, I worked for a moving company. One time, while moving a client into their new home, one of their boxes opened and all sorts of odd stuff fell out. Things like voodoo dolls and incense and all stuff like that. It was soooo creepy. My co-workers and I couldn't get out of there fast enough!' - Shelley, West Midlands.
'I once delivered three boxes of old cans of spaghetti to this one bloke's house. They all had cartoon characters and the like on them – there were Spider-Man cans, Sponge Bob and plenty of others. Apparently they're worth money if you sell them online, which is what this bloke wanted to do. I tell you, some people are crazy – but very imaginative!' - Gav, Essex
