Hello, my dear readers!

Today is a special day for me. Or should I say, for us. See, the other night I was sitting at home with nothing on the telly, just faffing around on the computer, and it occurred to me to try and track the oldest post on my blog. It wasn’t easy (I really need to start archiving my posts differently, don’t I?) but eventually I found it...and the date was 2009! November of 2009, to be more precise. Do you know what that means, my dears? It means, in just over a month, I’ll be celebrating my fourth anniversary as a blogger!

Well, after two serious posts and one that turned out to be half-serious, I thought we might as well close out the month with something not entirely light-hearted, but not entirely serious either. The problem was, I could not think of anything! Fortunately for me, my nephew Steven came in and, with impeccable timing, gave me the final post for October!

After the overdose of seriousness in my previous posts, I decided I’d come up here with something (a little) more light-hearted, and that can foster discussion as well! You see, the other night Stevie sent me an article on past versus the new, with a note – “you should talk about this on the blog”. I opened the link, read it, and had to agree with him. And here we are.

I’m afraid, after last week’s somewhat preachy post, we will be continuing the trend of seriousness here at the Cafe. See, even before I decided to write about how to keep safe when you are your own boss, somebody sent me (well, my nephew) this article, which advises about insurance when carrying out freelance jobs – and yes, in case you were wondering, that does include self-employed courier jobs.

It's that time of the year that some call the Silly Season, so I thought I'd come up here with a silly post to – hopefully – put a smile on your faces! See, while most of you were at the beach or visiting family or abroad or what have you, one of my readers was busy drawing up a comparison between self-employed courier jobs like his own and – of all things! - roleplaying games! And the most fascinating thing is, he absolutely has a point! So I've decided to make him the star of today's post – which also works for me, because now I can go down to the beach a half-hour earlier than usual! Whoo! The stage is yours, Ben from Devonshire!

For today's post, I hope you don't mind if I go into 'advice mode' again. I know I come across as a boring old bag telling you things you already know, but I can't help it, dears – it's in my nature! So bear with me a little longer, would you?

At any rate, I think today's topic for advice is a little less obvious and general than the last – this time, I'll be talking specifically about courier work for owner drivers, where to find it and how to go about making sure you get it. Those of you who aren't owner drivers may not find much to chew on here, but who knows? You may decide to take these tips and apply them to your own profession or line of work! It's never a bad thing to expand your horizons...
